We are witnessing the results of the earth's limitations; when economic models founded on continual growth through increased production and consumption can damage weather systems, endanger species, degrade ecosystems, growing social inequities and cultural homogenisation.

Becky Johnstone is part of a growing industry that is actively seeking to implement methods which reduce such damaging impact. We are working towards a more rational production and consumption model, using skills and position, technology and innovation, for the long-term good and for the well-being of all living creatures.

Ultimately we see the focus needing to be on "results" rather than simply responsiblity. We think looking at the desired results in  particular is what encourages action.We want to be part of that positive action.

Together we play a critical role in the growth-based economic model; As stake holders we seek to work together with our Trade Customers & Consumers.

Join us in becoming more valuable not only to you as the end-user but to our communities; both flora, fauna and humanity at large.

Our manufacturing chain produces only as much as our customers order. We do not make or hold unsold stock so there is no surplus to be disposed of or jobbed out, no associated transport or space, heating or electricity being used for warehousing.

We are constantly seeking to improve the sustainability of the materials we specify and the manufacturing technologies we use. We print and supply our products as locally as possible and aim to source as closely as possible to our end-users and the distribution channels we are servicing. Our fabrics are printed with water-based inks, so there is no excess ink to be disposed of, or any water used during production. No harmful chemicals are used in the creation of our products.

We also respect the implications of logistics and resource utilisation entailed in long supply-chains and infrastructure resiliency. Our products are shipped using a certified carbon neutral courier company and in recycled plastic wrap. Having worked with international mills for over 20 years, we are very  aware of the challenges, brought about by long-distance freight burdens, of logistics, transport and carbon footprints. Internally we actively work to reduce such burdens and minimise impact through our own recycling and the elimination of single use plastics.

EMERGING COMPLIANCE;

AN EVOLVING

GOAL

We aim to reduce to 0% the use of plastics across all aspects of the business; in fabrics and product substrates, labelling and packaging. Our fabrics use 100% natural fibres, pure linens, cottons, reconstituted and recycled cellulose fibre. Our fabrics are biodegradable, and will not perpetuate the plastic economy after their first life cycle. It is our aim to supply specification that will last for many years under good care and maintenance. We expect that with the appropriate care our products will be passed along the generations and will have a long first life cycle.

We are committed to best practice as a design house, and are constantly looking for ways to improve and upgrade our green practices. The ICOD (International Council of Design)Professional Code of Conduct is one of several industry codes we seek to implement in our design practice. We are not 100% there yet but we are actively working towards it.

We will not market designs that appear—through marketing or other stated claims—to be more environmentally sound than they are. We will not misrepresent or overrepresent the environmental qualifications of a design to a client, distributor or end user either by providing partial or misleading information, glossing over or covering up known shortfalls, or providing false information or analysis. We believe such practices are counterproductive and slow the industry's progress towards truly sustainable futures and the protection of ecosystems for generations to come.
